The homeowner who called you this morning probably called two other shops too. Whoever gets them a clear price first usually sets the bar. That’s the idea behind the two-hour quote rule.
This post covers a simple shop rule for small residential fence shops, why most of us miss it, and two ways to hit it without leaving the job you’re on. There’s a short video that walks it too.

The two-hour quote rule
When someone asks for a price, they get a real number within two hours.
Not a callback. Not “I’ll swing by Thursday.” A number they can read, show their spouse, and say yes to.
This isn’t a study. It’s a shop rule. But look at it from the homeowner’s side: they’re excited tonight. By Thursday they’ve talked to two other shops, priced a big-box kit, and maybe talked themselves out of the project. Interest cools. Speed catches it while it’s warm.

Why Speed Wins More Fence Jobs: The Two-Hour Quote Rule Explained (about three minutes, FenceAI on YouTube)
Why most shops miss two hours
The quote needs the truck. You can’t price until you measure, you can’t measure until you drive, and your schedule is full of actual fence work. So the quote waits on the schedule.
The fix is to stop making the easy quotes wait on the truck.
Method #1: the customer quotes from home
Put FenceAI.app on your website. The homeowner:
- Traces the fence on a satellite map, or types the linear feet
- Picks the height and style, with style pictures so they’re not guessing
- Adds walk or drive gates
- Sees a total right then
That total comes from your pricebook: your costs, your markup, your delivery miles. FenceAI.app doesn’t invent prices.
They e-sign on the same link. Once you’ve connected your own Stripe, PayPal, or Square keys, they can pay the deposit there too (written setup guides at fenceai.app/access/). You get an email alert the moment a quote comes in. SMS text alerts are Crew only, coming soon.
Method #2: they call you
Pull up the address, trace the line on the map while you’re talking (or type the feet they give you), and send the share link before you hang up.
They open it from home. It has your logo and your warranty line, and they can read it in English or Spanish. Same link to sign and put the deposit down.
Fast doesn’t mean sloppy
The worry with speed is underbidding. FenceAI.app guards against it:
- Cost vs. sell check. You see your cost against your sell price, with a warning when a job comes in too thin.
- Short-run package. Trip-minimum logic so a forty-foot job doesn’t wipe you out.
- Odd lots still get a look. Steep grade, tear-out, a tricky property line: go look. Straight runs are where speed wins.
What FenceAI.app is (and isn’t)
A quoting license for small residential fence shops, solo operators to small crews: measure, pricebook, send, sign, deposit.
It is not a field-service suite. No dispatch, no crew GPS, no CRM pipeline inside the product. Need leads in your CRM? Export a file (CSV, HubSpot, Salesforce, or JSON).
